Six Traits Writing
As part of a school-wide goal initiated in 2004-2005 to improve writing proficiency, the ASFG Middle School has adopted the 6 Traits writing model for instruction and assessment. This model is well known and widely used in the United States as well as in international schools. The 6 Traits is not a writing program; rather, it is a model that provides a common language to both students and teachers about the components (or traits) of quality writing. These writing traits, which cross different genres of writing, include:
- IDEAS
- ORGANIZATION
- VOICE
- WORD CHOICE
- SENTENCE FLUENCY
- CONVENTIONS
We have developed our own ASFG Middle School Writing Rubric, which we use school-wide, adapted from rubrics created by author Vickie Spandel and by the Oregon Department of Education (see sources cited below). We use the 6 Traits not only in English classes, but we have begun to implement the use of this model across the curriculum, including translating our rubric into Spanish for use in our Mexican program as well. In addition, all of our students engage in a three-day common writing assessment in the fall and again in the spring in order to assess their individual and group development in these writing traits.
