NJHS
The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is an organization established to recognize outstanding middle school level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character.
Five main purposes outlined in the NJHS constitution have guided chapters from the beginning: To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop worthy school and community citizenship, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.
Students in grades seven through nine are eligible for membership. For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a cumulative average of 90% or better and no grades below 80%. Those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Student Activity Information Form that provides the five-member faculty council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service. A history of leadership experiences and participation in school or community service is required. To evaluate a candidate’s character, the faculty council uses two forms of input. First, school disciplinary records are reviewed. Second, members of the faculty are solicited for input regarding their professional reflections on a candidate’s character, enthusiasm, motivation and attitude.
NJHS members participate in a series of school events and community service projects throughout the year. They hold meetings to plan fund raisers and visits to different community settings. Through these projects and events, they acquire significant learning experiences and develop a concern for social justice. They obtain recognition for personal efforts and achievements and begin to understand that they have both limitations and strengths. They learn to express themselves using good communication skills, and they engage in problem solving and project planning.
