Projects
Welcome to early childhood's PROJECT page! Our study of The Project Approach began many years ago, but this school year, early childhood faculty conducted a book study around the recently published Picturing the Project Approach. The book's authors are friends of our school and familiar with our work.
Below you will find links to some of the powerful learning that took place during our section's in-depth study of projects throughout the 2018-2019 school year. These projects document learning, joy, imagination, knowledge, and advocacy that very young children possess and which, as educators, are our responsibility to foster. We hope you are amazed, amused, inspired, and curious about this powerful learning.
A project is an extended in-depth investigation of a real-world topic with three phases: |
Phase 1
After determining what students are interested in, the teacher collects experiences, personal stories, and questions children would like to investigate.
|
Phase 2
The teacher plans for ways to give her students firsthand information about the subject. Experts are invited to share information with the class and children conduct fieldwork. Literacy and numeracy skills are incorporated into this learning and because this is a group endeavor, students practice social skills as they question and learn from each other.
|
Phase 3
Students and the teacher decide how they will document the project and share their learning and knowledge with others.
