During the preschool years, a child's role in their world changes dramatically. Their motor development, greater cognitive awareness, and increasing ability to talk and verbally communicate their feelings and desires, set them in a stage where they are trying to find out as much as they can about the physical and social world in which they live. In our early childhood program, we honor this drive for greater understanding and use it to promote our students' love of learning, initiative, and independence.
Within the framework of a daily routine and our ASFG Learning Targets, teachers encourage students to investigate materials, choose areas to work, and carry out group projects. Learning they are capable of exploring the world in a safe environment, students acquire self-confidence.
Our students are also given the opportunity to engage in free-play, choosing from a wide number of activities available to them in the block area, drama center, or reading area. Through play, children experiment with different objects and situations, make choices and negotiate with friends about what activities to pursue, and adopt an active role in their own learning. Teachers' curriculums are flexible and projects are often developed using children's ideas during free-play as guidelines for group investigations.
