Lights, Shadows and Reflection
PHASE 1
Sharing knowledge, experiences and questions
While sitting on the carpet, children saw lights reflecting on the wall and the ceiling. They started to investigate where they came from, and discovered it was from Dana's shirt.
Children's Theories
The things in the shirt are yellow, so the sun goes directly to them and then the light goes to the wall. Armando |
When the sun touches the glass, it shines and then the air sends the light to the wall. Laia |
The sun reflects when there is a window, if you move the window, the light moves too. Diego |
The wind sends the sun to the trees, from there, it reflects the light. Santiago |
Children wondered…
- Why does light bounce in some things and does not bounce on others? Clemente
- What makes reflection happen? José Andrés
- How does the wind send the light to other places? Nicolás
- If the light shines on all the shirts, why doesn't it always reflect on the wall? Alex
Teacher Topic Web
Teachers made a web to envision different aspects of the project.
PHASE 2
Exploring, discovering, making home-school connections and representing knowledge.
This is how reflection works. Clemente |
The sun is powerful, it helps things reflect and also makes shadows. André |
- I love shadows! Daniel
- Me too, we can be anyone, like a person with two heads! Alain
- When we run, they run after us! Daniel
- If we run up, we can run after them, if we run down, they chase us! Alain
Parents helped children investigate and experiment at home with lights and shadows. At school, they revisited, represented their experiences and shared their findings with peers. |
We saw the sun and then I blocked the sun and saw my reflection on the floor. My legs look long because the sun knows I am growing. Mateo |
Shadows are magical, my brother helped me with a lantern, we turned off the lights and my shadow was there! Maria Paula |
Children learned about kaleidoscopes and how to make one.
- It is really shiny inside, how does the light come through the caleidoscope if it is closed? José Andrés
Shadows and Reflection in our Environment
- There are shadows and reflections everywhere, you just have to pay attention. Luis
Experimenting with Mirrors
- Mirrors know you, their black criystals take a picture of you and their white crystals make the reflection of you. José Andrés
Reflections:
a book about our thoughts and experiences.
Clay
The sun helps the shadows, it gives them light. Diego |
Shadows are black and beautiful, like the night. María Paula |
Watercolors
The sun is reflecting on Dana's shirt, so the rainbow is only a shadow. Andrés
The reflection is made out of light. Nicolás |
I'm using a window to have a reflection of my body. Vika |
Are shadows the same during the day?
Estimating, experimenting, measuring and developing spatial awareness
- Vika's shadow is taller than Vika. Victoria
- I think my shadow is taller than me. Vika
- It cannot be taller because it is you. Ernesto
- It can, because the sun makes it look taller although it is you. José Andrés
- Our shadows are super small! Clemente
- The sun is very strong at this time, so the shadows don't have that much space to grow. José Andrés
Spheres - Different Perspectives
The spheres show my reflection, but different, like real life. Fabia |
In the spheres you look the same, but the back part looks smaller. Dana |
- Look, reflections that move! Daniel
- They are dancing! Maria Paula
- Let's catch them! Daniel
- (Moving the buttons) They come from the buttons. Daniel
- (The reflections did not move) Oh no, they do not come from the buttons. Daniel
- It doesn't matter, they are so much fun! Maria Paula
- Maybe they just come from the sun. Daniel
- Maybe they are just little pieces of a big reflection. Maria Paula
- Maybe they just appeared. Daniel
- Maybe. Maria Paula
- Maybe, just maybe. Daniel
Mr. Nacho and Mr. Memo are experts in science. They invited us to experiment with light, the sun, water, smoke, colored lights, prisms and many other elements.
Children's web
Children synthesized some of their learning through a web.
PHASE 3
Wrapping up the project and sharing the learning collaboratively with children in PK. The documentation was shared with parents through an iBook.
- If we share what we know, other children learn, they can also teach others and then the others learn too, we can all learn! Aidan
