5th Grade Service Learning
La Escuela de Niñas Ciegas, located in the Las Águilas neighborhood of Guadalajara, serves approximately forty blind girls. It is also a boarding school for about twenty of the girls, some of whom are orphans and others whose families live outside of Guadalajara.
We chose this program in 1998 because the girls needed financial help and emotional support from children and families outside of their visually impaired community. Our students benefit greatly from this experience. Our fifth graders make monthly visits in which they have the opportunity to interact with this wonderful group of girls by playing games, dancing, reading stories and conversing. During the year there are various fundraisers which take place: raffles, bake sales, and a walk-a-thon at ASFG. The generosity of our kids and families has allowed us to donate several items that the school has needed.
We presently cover the uniform, tuition and transportation for one of the graduates of the Blind Girls School. We also sponsor an annual pool and pizza party at ASFG each June for these girls. Our kids enjoy spending holidays with the girls, such as Valentine's Day when they exchange cards which our students make in Braille. We also have fun playing soccer with a ball that has a bell inside and the blind girls usually beat us! Needless to say, this has been a most rewarding experience for all involved, students, teachers and parents.
