Additional Activities
Battle of Books
As part of our school-wide effort encourage student reading over the summer, the middle school is proud to continue the Battle of the Books. This is an annual competition within the ASFG Middle School in which each student is required to read one book in English and one book in Spanish over the summer.
The Battle of the Books competition takes place once we return to school in August. This is a one day event in which middle school studentsare placed on multi grade level teams to compete against other teams who have read the same books. Each team earns points for questions that they answer correctly. After many rounds of questions, there is a winning team at the end of the competition. The Battle of the Books is a fun way to get kids excited about reading.
Sink or Swim
Sink or Swim typically takes place in the spring. We take on three challenges including building a boat out of cardboard that takes one participant/sailor across the pool! There are two other challenges: Team Building Challenges and anImprov Activity in the auditorium. Students are placed in multi-grade groups with a teacher-leader. They make their way through the day and hopefully will find their team in the finals for the boat challenge. The day is a lot of fun and is successful because of the teacher support we have in Middle School. We are asking, will you Sink or Swim with us?
Survivor Day
Survivor Day is a daylong event that typically takes place right before our December / January vacation. In this event, Students are placed in mixed grade teams and participate in team building activities within their group and competitions with other groups. The purpose of this event is to enhance the climate in middle school. Judging from the comments of students and teachers, it is very effective. The students in the various grade levels work well with each other, get to know each other, and form cohesive teams. The teachers either lead a group or are in charge of running an activity. In the beginning of the day each team gets together and creates a mascot and a team song. Then, all the teams share their team’s song during an assembly in the auditorium. After the competitions finish, we have another assembly in the auditorium to present prizes for the winners.
Rec Night
Rec Night is a traditional Middle School event designed to provide an evening for our students to come to school and have fun participating in a safe environment. Students enjoy a fun atmosphere of music, dancing, games, and food. Rec Nights give our students and teachers an opportunity to spend some time together in a non-classroom setting.
We generally host two Rec Nights throughout the year; one in October and one in May or June. Over the last several years, we have invited the fourth graders to come to Rec Night as their official welcome to Middle School. We enjoy providing this fun opportunity for our students and believe that events like this help us to create a positive school climate.
